Why I'm running.

Alex Wan photo
As you have likely heard, State Representative Pat Gardner will be retiring after the 2020 General Assembly. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to her for her nearly 20 years of public service and leadership representing the City of Atlanta.

I humbly ask for your vote to represent Georgia State House District 57.

I have called District 57 home for more than 25 years. Over that time, you and I have worked together with our sleeves rolled up, tackling our community’s challenges. During that span, I also had the privilege of working on your behalf for eight years as an Atlanta City Council member, serving as your voice for our neighborhoods on the issues we care about. Since my City Council service, my commitment to working on our issues continues through serving as your Fulton/Atlanta citizen representative on the Atlanta Regional Commission Board and as a member of the Mayor’s LGBTQ Advisory Board.

It goes without saying that these are challenging political times. The progressive values that we share as Atlantans are under attack at the state and federal levels. The right to a fair and secure voting process. The right for women to control their own reproductive health. The imperative to ensure affordable housing and our ability to age in place. The imperative to protect this precious planet we call home. The right for all of us to live our lives safe from discrimination based on who we are. Our collective fight for access, opportunity, inclusion, equality AND equity is ongoing. Learn more about my stance on the issues here.

At the same time we must continue championing environmental and sustainability initiatives, a robust slate of accessible and affordable transportation alternatives and, of course, quality comprehensive education for children from across this great district, from Adair Park, Beecher-Donnelly and Castleberry Hill to Lindridge-Martin Manor, Morningside Lenox Park, Virginia-Highland, Mechanicsville, Midtown and Downtown, and onward to Oakland City, Pittsburgh and West End.

Amid the many pressing issues that face us, we must look to leadership that we know and trust. To the commitment that we have experienced first-hand in our community. And to the representation we know to be present and engaged at the most local level.

I hope that my service to our district since I moved here over 25 years ago has demonstrated the kind of representative I will be. You know my values. You know my commitment to service. You know that I’m accessible. And you know that my experience on the Atlanta City Council will be invaluable for championing the issues – the imperatives – where the State plays such an important role.

Let’s continue our ongoing conversations about our work, our priorities, and our values that I’ll be privileged to take to the Gold Dome on our behalf. I’ll be seeing you – as we have done for many years – on our front porches, at community meetings, at our neighbors’ homes, at the grocery store, and by phone or email.

In the meantime, please consider supporting my campaign for Georgia State House District 57. Any amount is appreciated. No donation is too small. Thank you for any contribution you can make.

Thank you for your support, ideas and energy on our journey,
Alex signature
What does the Georgia House of Representatives do?

The Georgia House of Representatives, along with the Georgia Senate, makes up one of the largest state legislatures in the nation, the Georgia General Assembly. The State Constitution imbues the legislature with the power to make laws, set the state budget and perform other functions. The House and the Senate have similar duties, but both also have unique duties; for instance, appropriations bills (potential laws) must originate in the House. Georgia's legislature meets from January through March at the State Capitol in Atlanta. Alex Wan is a candidate for Georgia House District 57 in the Democratic Primary Election originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2020, but delayed until June 9 due to COVID-19.
